Hawke intrinsically safe cable terminations glands, atex directive and hazardous areas classification

Cost reduction whilst maintaining safety has, for a long time, been uppermost in the minds of designers of offshore installations. Products have to withstand this harsh environment for many years with the minimum of maintenance. So, when designers decided to use unarmoured terminations cable in these circumstances because of its undoubted cost and labour saving benefits, their thoughts obviously turned to the critical cable termination component, the cable gland. For many years cable glands comprising of an inner, outer and deluge seal, as well as an armour clamp, have been successfully employed. Now consideration had to be given to a cable gland without an armour clamp to give the critical cable pull-out criteria required, as well as all the other safety features associated with the product. Hawke had a standard cable gland with just one seal that met these requirements but the design engineers demanded something more. They required a cable gland that still employed the two compression seals, was deluge protected and, in the unlikely case of any one of the compression seals failing, the cable terminations gland still had to retain its cable pullout capabilities and flameproof protection. Hawke developed the 501/423 EExd IIC/EExe cable gland range, certified by EECS (BASEEFA) under the ATEX Directive, exceeding the expectations of these design engineers. In addition, this cable gland has been developed with the installer in mind, being quick and easy to assemble, requiring only one size spanner/wrench. The new range accommodates all types of unarmoured elastomer and plastic insulated cable. The cable gland may also be used on braided cable in increased safety EExe applications, where the braid is required to be terminated inside the enclosure. The Hawke 501/423 cable terminations gland has undergone extensive third party witnessed testing and has been shown to be superior with regard to pullout performance compared with similar products on the market. The dual seals combined with the internal 'O' ring deluge seal, have achieved a margin of safety hitherto unrealised.
